Popular Nigerian comedian, musician, and skit maker Lawal Michael Nasiru Bolaji, better known as Nasboi, has come under fire from netizens on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) after featuring in a promotional video for the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL)’s December holiday fuel offer.
In the advert, Nasboi promotes a festive season deal from NNPCL, urging Nigerians to purchase ₦35,000 or more worth of petrol at NNPC stations to receive a ₦5,000 free fuel voucher. He frames the offer as a way to “fuel your joy” during the holiday period.

Many users accusing Nasboi of aligning with NNPCL at a time when the state-owned oil giant is perceived to be losing ground in an escalating price competition with the privately-owned Dangote Petroleum Refinery.
“Instead of NNPC passing on real savings by buying cheaper from Dangote, they’re paying celebrities like Nasboi for PR stunts,” one user comment read. Others mocked the voucher’s value, pointing out that it offers minimal relief compared to the lower base prices now available at stations sourcing from Dangote.
“This gig no pure at all because how many people can afford to buy ₦35k worth of fuel at a go & what is ₦5k to those that can afford it? Isn’t it better to patronize Dangote’s affiliated MRS selling at ₦739/liter than NNPC ‘s ₦879 that you have to buy ₦35k to win bonus?” another user Rotimi Oladipupo wrote.

“Promotion for fuel wey cost pass gold? Even with 5k voucher, NNPC still dey collect our life savings. Abeg, make una reduce the main price first before una talk about ‘fueling joy,” Jiggy Mary said.
The Dangote-NNPCL rivalry continues to dominate headlines, with many Nigerians fuming as a government owned fuel subsidiary sells fuel at high price while some netizens hope that the sustained competition will drive prices even lower in the coming year.
