America online movie streaming giant, Netflix has acquired the movie, “Mokalik”, which was produced by an award-winning director and producer, Kunle Afolayan.
Afolayan made this disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday on the sideline of the French-Nigerian Cinema Days holding from July 2-3 at Alliance Francaise, Ikoyi, Lagos.
“I wish to inform you that Netflix has acquired “Mokalik” and some other of my films,” he said.
The acquisition represents Netflix’s ongoing aggressive interest for the African motion picture sector in recent times where there is still relatively untapped source of talents and content. The company had reportedly signaled that it planned to get serious about ordering/acquiring original series and films from the African continent, created by Africans.
Although Afolayan did not disclose the value paid for the acquisition, he added that the company has not announced when the films will be released on the platform.
It should be recalled that “Mokalik” features singer Simisola Ogunleye, a.k.a Simi, in her debut acting role and Big Brother Naija ex-housemate, Tobi Bakre among other actors including Femi Adebayo, Ayo Adesanya, Faithia Williams and Lateef Oladimeji.
