Netflix’s ‘The Harder They Fall’ features Fela Kuti’s song ‘Let’s Start’

Netflix released an impressive first-look at Jeymes Samuel’s star-studded feature film, The Harder They Fall. The stylised, Tarantino-esque Black Western looks incredibly fun and has an astonishingly stacked cast.

The trailer of the film features a track by Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti. Titled Let’s Start, the song shines in all its horn-and-bass-heavy glory. Let’s Start is from the album Fela with Ginger Baker – Live. You can listen to the track here.

“The Harder They Fall” has a classic Western plot about a young man trying to get revenge on the man who killed his parents. However, we expect Jeymes Samuel to put his own idiosyncratic spin on it.

The film stars Jonathan Majors, LaKeith Stanfield, Delroy Lindo, Regina King, and also Idris Elba. The Harder They Fall follows the story of two fearsome outlaws, Nat Love (played by Jonathan Majors) and Rufus Buck (Idris Elba).

Here’s Netflix’s official synopsis of The Harder They Fall

“When outlaw Nat Love (Jonathan Majors) discovers that his enemy Rufus Buck (Idris Elba) is being released from prison, he rounds up his gang to track Rufus down and seek revenge.

“Those riding with him in this assured, righteously new school Western include his former love Stagecoach Mary (Zazie Beetz), his right and left-hand men — hot-tempered Bill Pickett (Edi Gathegi) and fast drawing Jim Beckwourth (R.J. Cyler) — and a surprising adversary-turned-ally. Rufus Buck has his own fearsome crew, including ‘Treacherous’ Trudy Smith (Regina King) and Cherokee Bill (LaKeith Stanfield). And they are not a group that knows how to lose.”

Written by Jeymes Samuel and Boaz Yakin, the film will premiere on the streaming platform on an unconfirmed date later this year. Shawn Carter, James Lassiter, Lawrence Bender, and Jeymes Samuel produced the film. The film also stars Danielle Deadwyler, Damon Wayans Jr. and Deon Cole.

Deadline announced the film in mid-2019. Although originally slated to start filming in March 2020. the pandemic forced the production to be postponed.

Although no official release date has been announced, take a first look at the film in the teaser trailer below.
