A video of World Trade Organisation (WTO) Director-General Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala proudly showcasing Igbo culture at the WTO Open Day has sparked reactions on social media.
In the viral clip, the former Nigerian finance minister is seen dancing enthusiastically alongside colourful masquerades, traditional dancers, and ogene drummers, highlighting the richness of Igbo heritage before an international audience.
The performance formed part of activities at the WTO Open Day, where member countries and cultures were celebrated through music, dance, and other cultural displays.

Reacting to the video, many social media users praised Okonjo-Iweala for promoting Nigerian and Igbo traditions on the global stage.
One user wrote, “She has earned the right to do whatever she likes and wants.”
Another commented, “Your culture, language and tradition define who you are. Proudly Igbotic nwa afo.”
One remarked: “Ada ndi Ogwashi Ukwu, Nwunye ndi Umuahia”
Others described the display as a powerful celebration of cultural identity and a reminder of the importance of preserving indigenous traditions.
Okonjo-Iweala, who became the first woman and first African to lead the WTO in March 2021, is one of Nigeria’s most accomplished public servants.
Born in 1954, she studied at Harvard University before earning a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1981.

She spent 25 years at the World Bank, rising to the position of Managing Director, and later served twice as Nigeria’s Minister of Finance. She also made history as the country’s first female Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Beyond her public service career, Okonjo-Iweala serves on the boards of several global organisations, including Standard Chartered Bank and the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (GAVI).
