In a pointed response to ongoing national discourse, actress and filmmaker Mary Njoku has urged Nigerians to stop framing societal frustrations as an “Olodo uprising.”

Njoku, who shares her thoughts on Instagram, argued that recent trends reveal deeper problems in the system rather than simple ignorance.

Stop calling it an ‘Olodo uprising.’ What’s happening isn’t a celebration of ignorance,” she wrote. “It’s the consequence of a country that has steadily devalued education, excellence, and intellectual achievement.”

She pointed to the struggles many face. Graduates with first-class degrees, master’s, and even PhDs often find few opportunities and low pay. “When survival becomes the priority, people will naturally go where the opportunities are,” Njoku explained. “Don’t blame the people for adapting. Blame the system for making education feel like a bad investment.”

Her words come as a response to rapper Ycee’s recent podcast remarks. Ycee criticised an “Olodo uprising.” He described it as a culture that celebrates ignorance and mediocrity over academic success. He used streamer Peller as an example of shifting values toward viral fame.

The statement caused backlash with Peller, and others accused Ycee of disrespect. Ycee later clarified his intent in response. He said he was highlighting broader priorities, not attacking individuals.
