Nigerian artist Uzoma Dunkwu has received an Emmy Award, a top international honour that celebrates outstanding work in television and streaming, for his character design on Marvel Animation’s Eyes of Wakanda.
The Television Academy named Dunkwu as one of the 2026 juried Emmy winners in August. He received the award for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation, Character Design, for his work on the episode “Into the Lion’s Den.”
Juried awards, unlike competitive Emmy categories, are decided by panels of industry professionals who review the entries and choose the winners.
These awards were presented during the 2026 Creative Arts Emmy ceremonies in Los Angeles in September.
Dunkwu works in Lagos as a visual development artist, character designer, animation director, and educator. He has contributed to projects for Marvel, Netflix, and Disney.

He studied electrical and electronics engineering at the University of Benin, then built his artistic career through comics, illustration, concept art, and animation.
Dunkwu joined the Eyes of Wakanda production in 2021 as an early concept artist. He helped develop and design characters, including members of the Dora Milaje.
He later worked on characters throughout the animated series, which tells the story of Wakandan warriors across different eras as they recover vibranium artefacts and protect Wakanda.
After his Emmy win was announced, Dunkwu dedicated the award to emerging artists in Nigeria and the Global South.
