A Nigerian cleric, Bishop Taiwo Michael Fakunle, has been shot dead at his residence in Kensington, Johannesburg, South Africa, in a violent incident that has left members of the Nigerian community in the country deeply concerned.

The Nigerian Citizens Association, South Africa (NICASA), confirmed the killing in a statement that was issued on Friday.

According to the association, Fakunle, who hailed from Ekiti State, Nigeria, was attacked inside his Johannesburg home after two unidentified individuals allegedly gained access to the property.

NICASA National President, Rev. Frank Onyekwelu, said the attackers opened fire on the cleric several times before fleeing the scene.

He disclosed that the organisation had informed the Consulate General of Nigeria in Johannesburg about the incident, while a murder case has also been registered at the Jeppe Police Station.

However, the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear, and the identities and whereabouts of the alleged attackers have not been established.

Onyekwelu said: “According to the information available to NICASA, two suspects gained access to his residence and opened fire on him, reportedly discharging more than seven bullets.”

He described the killing as a devastating loss not only for Fakunle’s family but also for Nigerians living in South Africa.

Onyekwelu added:“This was not merely an ordinary loss of life; it was a horrific and senseless act of violence that has robbed a family of a loved one and the Nigerian community of another precious life.”
