Nigerian Gay Activist, Okporo, Part Ways With Husband After Three Years of Marriage

Nigerian-born LGBTQ+ rights activist based in the United States, Edafe Okporo, and his husband, Nicholas Giglio, have announced the end of their three-year marriage.

The couple, who tied the knot in September 2022, announced on Saturday morning via Instagram that they have filed for a no-fault divorce.

The Warri-born human rights activist further described the decision to separate as a “hard decision,” emphasising that they are prioritising a process rooted in “honesty and respect” as they navigate this transition.

He also requested privacy and understanding during this time.

“Nick and I, have made the mutual decision to end our marriage. We have officially filed for a no-fault divorce by mutual agreement. This has been a hard decision, and we are taking the time and space we need to move through it with honesty and respect,” he wrote.

“We ask for grace as we navigate this next chapter. You’re welcome to continue holding space for both of us, together or separately. Thank you for your love and support. Nick & Edafe.”

Edafe was born in Warri, Delta state. He is the executive director of Refuge America, an organisation that helps to resettle LGBTQ+ asylum-seekers.
