The Attorney-General of Lagos State, Lawal Pedro (SAN), the Chief Coroner, and the presiding Coroner have fired back at Eurapharma Care Services Nigeria Limited over its attempt to halt the coroner’s inquest into the death of 21-month-old Nkanu Adichie-Esege, son of renowned author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
The young boy died on January 7, 2026, at the hospital. The facility later obtained an interim order from Justice A.O. Opesanwo of the Lagos High Court in Ikoyi, temporarily stopping the inquest.

In a preliminary objection filed on June 5, 2026, the Lagos AG and coroners described the hospital’s application for judicial review as incompetent, premature, and an abuse of court process. They argued that the Coroner’s Court has clear statutory powers under the Lagos State Coroners System Law to investigate the death.
The respondents also clarified that the inquest can proceed even if the child’s body was cremated, relying on Section 21 of the Coroners Law. The matter continues to attract public attention as it touches on issues of medical responsibility and justice for bereaved families.
