Nobody is coming to save us – Omoni Oboli writes in emotional letter to Nollywood

Omoni Oboli, the Nollywood actress cum filmmaker, has called on her colleagues in the Nigerian film industry to unite and support one another.

In an open letter shared on her social media pages on Wednesday, the filmmaker who noted that nobody is coming to save them, as she highlighted the struggles faced by Nollywood professionals.

She urged industry players to be intentional about their survival and to uplift those working tirelessly to keep the industry alive.

“Nobody is coming to save us,” she wrote. “We are all we have, but we are enough. We must be intentional about our survival. It’s hard all around, I know, but let’s support the ones fighting tooth and nail to keep the industry running. Let’s not choke them.”

Omoni emphasised that many filmmakers are battling to recoup their investments, yet continue creating out of sheer passion and belief in the future of Nollywood. She further encouraged her peers to stay resilient, assuring them that brighter days lie ahead.

“Let’s support ourselves… It will get better. God is in our story. Always remember that I love you,” she added.

Recently, Omoni also spoke out against Ghanaian television stations for broadcasting Nollywood YouTube films without authorization. She described the act as shameful and vowed to pursue legal action to protect the intellectual property of Nigerian creatives.

Despite the hurdles, Omoni continues to thrive. Her latest film, The Uprising, grossed over ₦93 million in its opening week, ranking as the number one Nollywood movie at the box office that weekend. Additionally, her 2019 film, Last Year Single, recently soared to the top of Netflix’s chart in Nigeria.

As a vocal voice in Nollywood, Omoni recently has dismissed claims that Nigerian films are overly predictable, arguing instead that the industry is rich in original storytelling.

She has also offered advice to women, particularly those in the entertainment industry, urging them to choose supportive partners, emphasising that lack of support can derail both careers and personal well-being.
