Nigerian actress Rita Edochie has sparked widespread reactions after publicly condemning a wedding MC for applying blatant double standards during a recent marriage ceremony.
The MC, while officiating the wedding of a couple Mirabel and Thomas, instructed the bride to vow that she would never cheat or meet another man even if her husband travels for extended periods.
He reinforced this with a serious prayer warning of the consequences if she broke her vow. However, when addressing the possibility of the groom cheating, the MC casually said, “may God forgive him.”

Reacting with visible anger, Rita Edochie wrote:
“I am very angry this morning and I pray this is just a joke and content.. Look if men can be excused because they are ‘Polygamous by nature’, then women deserve the same grace, the same mercy, and the same forgiveness. Enough of this gender inequality!!”
She further argued that society has long preached two different gospels; one lenient for men and one harsh for women. While male infidelity is often excused as “his nature” or a “moment of weakness,” a woman who commits the same offence is condemned, branded, and sometimes stripped of her home and dignity.
Rita questioned: “How can the same act produce two different verdicts?” She stressed that marriage vows must come with equal standards, equal accountability, and equal mercy. “If infidelity is a sin, then it is a sin for both.”
