Nigeria has lost one of its oldest Juju music stars, Ahuja Bello, who rose to fame in the 1970s.

The veteran singer passed away in the early hours of Sunday, August 25, 2024, according to a statement issued by his son, Adetunji Bello. His death came just a day after he marked his 83rd birthday.

Born Ismaila Dele Bello on August 24, 1942, in Iseyin, Oyo State, Ahuja Bello became one of the most celebrated Juju musicians of his time. He was not only a singer but also a guitarist and the leader of a successful band that made waves across Nigeria and beyond in the 1970s and 1980s.

Before venturing fully into music, Bello worked as an electronic technician. But in 1976, he decided to follow his passion for music and formed his own band, known as Ahuja Bello and His Golden Eagles Band. The group quickly became popular and contributed greatly to the growth of Juju music in Nigeria.

Some of his most memorable hits include Awa ti Danfo and Ariya ti de, which remain evergreen classics in the Juju music world. His energetic stage performances and unique sound set him apart, earning him a strong following among music lovers of his era.

In 1979, Bello travelled to London where he recorded the album Ahuja in London. The trip also gave him the opportunity to interact with international music icons, including the late Jamaican reggae legend, Bob Marley.

However, his rising career suffered a major setback after he was involved in an accident on July 24, 1982, just a few weeks before his 40th birthday.

Ahuja Bello is remembered as a pioneer who helped spread Juju music beyond his time, leaving behind a legacy that younger generations still admire.
