Three decades after Scream terrified and delighted audiences worldwide, its creator Kevin Williamson has revealed he wrote the groundbreaking 1996 slasher with zero expectations of success.

“I never thought it would be a hit actually,” Williamson told AFP in a new interview. “I was just trying to get a job. I was just trying to write a script to get noticed by Hollywood so that I get hired to write another movie. And I just wrote what I love: I love horror films.”

Back in the mid-1990s, the horror genre was widely considered out of date in Hollywood a situation that left Williamson who was an aspiring writer with mixed feelings.

Directed by the late Wes Craven, Scream arrived on December 20, 1996, armed with sharp meta-humor, self-referential rules for surviving slashers, and the now-iconic Ghostface mask.

The film defied the odds, grossing over $173 million worldwide on a modest budget pushing moves to reawaken the genre. It launched one of cinema’s most enduring franchises, spawning six sequels, with a seventh on its way and cementing Williamson’s legacy as a horror innovator.

Williamson wrote the first three entries and served as executive producer on later films. Now, in a full-circle moment, he is set to direct Scream 7 starring returning icon Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott.
