Nigerian gay rights activist, Bisi Alimi, has used this year’s Independence Day to send a message of hope for the future of the LGBTQ+ community in the country.
In a post shared on Instagram on Wednesday, October 1, Bisi prayed for a Nigeria where people can live freely regardless of their sexual orientation. He also spoke about the struggles Nigerians are currently facing, including hardship, insecurity and poor governance.

Bisi wrote that he looks forward to the day when members of the LGBTQ+ community will be fully accepted without fear or discrimination.
In his words, “Someday our sun will shine the brightest and our rainbow children will be seen in full colour, in full light, as they were always meant to be.”
He also added, “Happy Independence Day to those who celebrate Nigeria. We hope that one day we will look back and these hardships, insecurities, and poor governance will be a thing of the past. May unity, peace, and prosperity continue to bless our great nation.”
