The 40-year-old wedding cake slice to be auctioned for £500

A slice of the cake used at the wedding of Late British royals, Princess Diana and Prince Charles is going up for auction.  It is expected to generate £500(287,461 thousand naira).

The duo tied the knot on July 29, 1981. They were married at St Paul’s Cathedral in London. Although, their marriage did not last, their nuptials were the talk of the town. It’s estimated that 750 million people across 74 countries watched Charles and Diana’s wedding that day. The slice of their wedding cake is going up for auction exactly forty years later.

The slice is a 28-ounce portion  of about 800 grams featuring a royal coat of arms in blue, gold and red. It has been preserved in cling film and stored in a floral tin over the years.

However, on August 11, 2021, it will go up for auction. The 40 year old cake is expected to go for the price of £500(287,461 thousand naira).

This is not the first royal wedding cake to be repurposed years on. In 2018, during their son, Prince Louis’ christening, Prince William and Kate Middleton’s 2011 wedding fruitcake was served.

Diana and Charles’ wedding cake was given to a member of the Queen Mother’s household at Clarence House, Moyra Smith. The member then preserved it.

Chris Albury from Gloucestershire’s Dominic Winter Auctioneers stated that the cake

“appears to be in exactly the same good condition, but we advise against eating it.”

In accordance with royal tradition, Prince Harry and Prince William’s parents served their guests fruitcake at the reception after their nuptials. The tiered cake stood 5 feet tall and weighed 225 pounds.
