The management of Nollywood actress and filmmaker Toyin Abraham has addressed the backlash that followed her reaction to filmmaker Kunle Afolayan’s comments on cinema earnings and film promotion.
The controversy began after Afolayan spoke about the gap between reported box office figures and what producers actually earn, sparking debate across Nollywood.

Fans of Funke Akindele later criticised Abraham, accusing her of trivialising the issue instead of openly challenging Afolayan.
Abraham’s manager, Samuel Olatunji, said the actress received several calls after the comments went public and understood Afolayan’s point about box office figures versus real earnings.

He revealed that Afolayan later contacted Abraham directly to clarify his remarks, adding that both parties have since moved on.

Olatunji also dismissed claims that Abraham doubted films could gross one billion naira, describing the narrative as false. He said the actress has never questioned verified box office figures nor complained about other filmmakers’ success.
According to the statement, Abraham’s main concern has always been fair cinema showtimes, which directly affect box office performance and earnings. The management urged industry stakeholders to focus on resolving key industry challenges rather than fueling public disagreements.

Afolayan’s comment, which sparked the debate, was part of a broader discussion on film profits, where he said he was not interested in billion-naira box office figures if they did not translate to meaningful earnings.
