Film director Tolu Fagbure has stirred debate in the Nigerian film industry after declaring that actress Wunmi Toriola surpasses some of Nollywood’s biggest female stars in acting ability and decision-making.

Speaking during a recent interview, Fagbure praised Toriola’s talent, describing her as a more accomplished actress than Funke Akindele, Mercy Aigbe and Toyin Abraham combined.

He also commended what he called her wisdom in recognising the importance of collaboration during film production.

According to the filmmaker, Toriola’s project, Queen Latifa, stands out because of the choices she made behind the scenes rather than trying to take on every responsibility herself.

Fagbure argued that one of the strongest decisions made during the film’s production was Toriola’s decision not to credit herself as the producer.

Instead, she entrusted the role to filmmaker Judith Audu, whom he believes was better suited to oversee that aspect of the project.

He said the move demonstrated self-awareness and maturity, adding that Toriola understood her strengths and limitations rather than attempting to handle responsibilities she was not equipped to handle.

Fagbure said: “Wunmi Toriola is better than Funke Akindele, Mercy Aigbe and Toyin Abraham put together when it comes to acting, and she’s the wisest of them all. If you watch Queen Latifa, it’s a better film production.

Fagbure added: “She didn’t credit herself as a producer; she hired Judith Audu because she knows she’s not capable.”
