Tory Lanez handed 10-year prison term for shooting Meg Thee Stallion

Canadian rapper and singer Tory Lanez has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for shooting Megan Pete, also known as Meg the Stallion.

He was found guilty of shooting her in the foot following an altercation in 2020.

The artist faced three gun-related charges in December 2022. The charges included assault with a semiautomatic handgun, carrying a loaded and unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence.

Following his conviction, he was held in county jail.

Lanez was found guilty of shooting fellow entertainer and Grammy winner Megan Thee Stallion in the foot during an argument after they left Kylie Jenner’s party in 2020.

He faced a maximum sentence of 22 years and eight months in prison. The incident resulted in Meg needing surgery to remove bullet fragments from her foot.

Initially, prosecutors in the case had called for a 13-year prison sentence, asserting that Lanez “lacked remorse and was clearly incapable of accepting any responsibility for his own actions.”

The Sentence

Lanez’s defense team, on the other hand, sought probation and a residential drug treatment program to address his alcohol issues.

During the hearing, the California state judge read summaries of 76 supportive letters from Lanez’s fans and supporters, including one from fellow rapper Iggy Azalea.

Megan Thee Stallion, who chose not to attend the sentencing as she couldn’t be in the same room with Lanez, remarked, “This is a statement for all survivors that their lives matter and that there is zero tolerance for the torture that accompanies violence.”

After the sentence was pronounced, Lanez addressed the court, stating, “If I could turn back time on the series of events that night, I would. She was my friend and someone I still care about to this day. Everything I did wrong that night I take full responsibility for.”

Social media has been abuzz with discussions on the case. Some believe that Lanez’s conviction is justified, while others argue that 10 years is too severe a punishment for an incident involving a “grazed foot.”
