On Saturday, April 20, Tunde Onakoya became a Guinness World Record holder after playing the game of chess for 60 hours nonstop.

According to the Lagos state-born chess champion, the objective of the exercise is to raise funds for underprivileged children across the slums of Nigeria and the globe at large.

It is possible to do great things from a small place,” the quote on the chess master, Tunde Onakoya’s X reads.

He is an embodiment of “impossible is nothing”, he has shown with his lifestyle and achievement that indeed, everything is attainable should you decide to participate and make a difference.

The Story of the Chess Master, Tunde Onakoya

Tunde Onakoya, born in Ikorodu, Lagos state commenced the contest on Wednesday, April 17. He has since continued to garner support from various personalities across the globe; from celebrities, and elites to social media users.

Onakoya is a man on a mission.

The aim and objective of his recent conquest is to amass the sum of $1 million to create opportunities for young lads who have been forgotten and neglected across the shanties of Lagos state (Nigeria) to the inner creeks of Ghana and Abidjan in Ivory Coast.

What Is The Aim And Objective of Tunde Onakoya’s Record Pursuit?

A progenitor, Tunde Onakoya in 2018 commenced a non-government organization (NGO) named, Chess in Slums Africa, the purpose of the community is to empower individuals, especially children and young adults from impoverished parts of Lagos state and other parts of Nigeria.

As of the time of this publication, at least over 200 beneficiaries of Chess in Slums Africa have been able to do something worthwhile with their lives. Chess in Slums Africa partnered with Chess.com in September 2020 as an educational tool for classrooms, chess clubs, and parents.

As of June 2021, Chess in Slums Africa had trained over 200 children and got lifelong scholarships for 20 of them. Explaining the purpose of the record pursuit, Tunde Onakoya explained on his X (otherwise known as Twitter) account:

“My people, it’s crunch time.

We have just 5 hours left to break a new world record for the longest chess marathon, and our mission to raise a million dollars for children’s education has become our top priority.

This is our purpose, our reason for being here. Let’s demonstrate to the world the incredible power of love. Together, we can make this happen.”
