For generations, marriage has often been presented as an important milestone that every adult should eventually reach.
But for some men approaching or passing 40, staying single is no longer viewed as a failure.
Instead, they see it as an opportunity to enjoy greater independence, focus on personal goals and build a life that works for them.
The number of adults living without a spouse or partner has increased over the years.
Men were also slightly more likely than women to be unpartnered among adults aged 25 to 54.

For some single men, freedom and control over their lives are major attractions. Without the responsibilities and compromises that can come with marriage, they may have more flexibility to concentrate on their careers, businesses, hobbies, friendships, travel and personal development.

Financial independence can also be easier to manage when a person is responsible primarily for his own household and priorities.
There is also the appeal of peace and emotional stability. A man who has experienced difficult relationships may prefer being alone to remaining in a relationship that creates constant conflict, anxiety or emotional exhaustion.

Recent accounts from people choosing to step away from dating in midlife have similarly highlighted peace, freedom and the absence of relationship related pressure as reasons for their decision.
However, being unmarried does not automatically make someone happier. Research has found that married adults, on average, often report higher levels of happiness and better economic outcomes than unpartnered adults.
Ultimately, turning 40 without a spouse does not have to mean a man has fallen behind. For some, marriage remains an important life goal for others, a fulfilling career, strong friendships, financial security, personal freedom and peace of mind provide enough satisfaction without a wedding.
