“The Herbert Macaulay Affair” is an upcoming movie by one of Nigeria’s most audacious filmmakers, Imoh Umoren, a timely piece at that. The biopic is based on the life of one of Nigeria’s founding father, Herbert Macaulay.
The movie teaser was released recently to give the public a feel of what to expect when it finally hits the cinemas. From the teaser, it looks to be an intense exploration of Nigeria in the 1920s, when the bubonic plague hit Lagos. Herbert Macaulay is considered the founder of Nigerian nationalism and was a voice of resistance against the British colonialists.
Speaking about the movie, Umoren shared; “The Herbert Macaulay Affair – is a story about the beginnings of the revolution. And hopefully, the life of Herbert Macaulay inspires us to stand up against tyranny.”
This teaser looks beautiful and inspiring in equal measure. Now, more than ever, Nigerians need to look back to move forward. This movie, hopefully, will drive a lot more filmmakers to look into making movies about Nigeria’s history.
Knowledge of Nigeria’s history — or the utter lack — is something that the present generation has come to be characterized with. There’s a startling lack of objective records when it comes to the foundation of our country.
“The Herbert Macaulay Affair” is scheduled for a September 2019 release.
