‘We really struggled to conceive’ – Adesua Etomi-Wellington

Nollywood actors Adesua Etomi and Banky W have shared the detailed testimony of how they struggled to conceive before they finally welcomed their son in January. The couple revealed that they went through failed IVF procedures and suffered a miscarriage of twins.

Adesua said that she and Banky had decided to have kids immediaely after getting married. But things did not work out the way they planned.

“When we got married, we [knew] we were going to be so busy. So we thought, let’s just get the children out of the way. Let’s do it now and just let it come through. And nothing happened. We tried and we tried but nothing happened. I remember having a conversation with Banky about doing IVF and he asked me to calm down and give it a year.”

Adesua continued, “In that first year, it was like a monthly disappointment. And anyone will tell you that when you want a child, even one or two months can seem like such a long time. Not to talk of people that have waited years and years.

Adesua also spoke about the heckling and trolling she suffered while trying to conceive. She said, “We got pregnant with our son after two and a half years and every single day of those two and a half years, someone trolled me. I couldn’t have an opinion without someone saying ‘go and born’ or ‘you did something with your womb’.”

“I have veins in my hands that no longer work. They are so traumatised that you can’t even get blood out of them. IVF is a very tasking thing, physically, emotionally, mentally, it was very tough. It was very hard and I was going through this hearing all the negative comments about it.”

“By the grace of God, we got pregnant with twins. We went for checkups and heard the heartbeats. But during a routine checkup, the doctor could not find the heartbeats of both babies.

Adesua Etomi said the doctors diagnosed her with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and said her ovarian reserve was “too high”. They also said Banky’s sperm morphology was “off”. At that point, they decided to give up on the invasive medical procedures. They decided to go with God’s will whatever it was. The couple even declined surrogacy.

Banky said, “We felt like God was telling us to stop. No tests, no pills, no injections. There’s nothing wrong with you”. And to their surprise, they conceived naturally and has their son Zaiah.

Banky’s announcement post makes a lot more sense in light of these revelations. He announced the birth of their son in January saying, “Words cannot properly express how grateful I am for you, how much I love you, or what we’ve been through. I’m thankful that you’re mine And that God made everything beautiful in His time He turned our tears into triumph and our loss into laughter.
