What I was Doing Before Fame — Kayode Kasum

Although a few celebrities were born into stardom, many of Nollywood’s finest talents came from less glamorous beginnings, one of such is movie director and producer, Kayode Kasum.

In a recent chat with eelive.ng, the Fate of Alakada and Suga Rush director disclosed that he used to take pictures at weddings during his early strides towards being a film director.

He went on to learn editing and animation and this ushered him in the luck that led him into the movie industry.

“I just wanted to tell stories,” he explained. “I have always had an interest in it. It was more like a headlong journey.

“I started from taking photographs at wedding events to learning how to edit, to learning animation to going to school to learn about film because I was interested in stories till when I had the knack to save a lot of money from my monthly salary as an editor and a motion graphics designers and I also went ahead to record my first song titled Dogman.”

Speaking on the factors that facilitated his growth in the movie industry, Kayode Kasum said, “I would say… I guess I just really worked hard and put myself out there to let people know that ‘I’m this young dude that has a knack for telling stories, who’s interested?. This is what I’ve done’ and I was hopeful that people would work with me, and I guess with grace and luck on my side, this happened.”

However, a film director should love the art itself and not just for financial gains; this according to the director of Nigeria’s first live-action animated movie is the most important quality any director should have in order to succeed.

“The most important quality a film director should have is to love the film that’s the most important thing because you’re not doing for money; you’re doing it because it’s what you love.

“As a film director, sometimes I make mistake, how won’t you make mistakes? First I always acknowledge that I’ve made a mistake.

“So if it’s a scene that I have shot wrongly, I’ll tell everyone it’s my mistake and we go again,” the Yaba Tech graduate added.

Kasum has produced and directed top movies including Fate of Alakada, Quam’s Money, Sugar Rush, This Lady Called Life, Kambili: The Whole 30 Yards, Oga Bolaji, Dognapped, and the forthcoming movies Ponzi and The Therapist .
