Why I didn’t report my rapist- BBNaija’s Khafi

Khafi Kareem, a former housemate of the 2019 season of the Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) reality television show has opened up candidly about why she din’t report the man who raped her after the brutal act.

Khafi’s revelation comes on the heels of the recent protests over the rape and murder of a 22-year-old in Nigeria.

Uwa, a 100-level microbiology student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), was attacked, raped and had her head bashed with a fire extinguisher in a church in Benin, Edo State. She later died from injuries sustained.

Khafi shared her harrowing experience via her Twitter page on Tuesday.

According to her the abuser apologized immediately and she made an excuse for him.

#WhyIDidntReport – because he apologised right after. Because I made myself believe him being drunk was an excuse,” she tweeted.

She also stated that even when she opened up to someone about it, she was blamed for getting raped and this made her feel dirty and ashamed.

“Because the one person I did tell said I caused it. Because I felt dirty and ashamed. #WeAreTired.”

Yes, this did happen to me. I’m sharing in the hope that others will feel no shame in sharing what happened to them. Please don’t deflect or say it is not my story when it was already hard enough sharing it.”

Meanwhile, Nigerian celebrities including Genevieve Nnaji have taken to social media to take a stand against rape; murder and killings by security operatives using the hashtags #JusticeForTina and #JusticeForUwa.
