Nigerian media personality and entrepreneur Toke Makinwa has sparked widespread discussion after openly explaining why she no longer pays her tithe to churches.
In a recent candid conversation shared widely on social media, Makinwa detailed her evolving views on tithing, emphasising personal conviction over tradition.

Makinwa spoke on the potential harm caused by some religious institutions, calling it “post-traumatic church syndrome” which is the emotional and spiritual damage inflicted on individuals by churches and their leaders.

The new mother sharing her observation noted that while many churches accumulate significant wealth through tithes and offerings and often funding grand buildings and projects, numerous congregants and community members continue to face basic struggles like rent, medical bills, and daily needs.

“I started thinking, if I have money and someone tells me they need it to pay rent, why should I pass it into a building that’s already rich?” she questioned. Makinwa then noted that she has decided to direct her resources toward more immediate and tangible impact. She now supports hospitals, maternity wards, widows, and strangers in genuine need, stating, “I would rather give my tithe to strangers who tell me their actual needs. The church is built. The pastors have money. Let’s help people the church cannot reach.”
The media star shared her personal journey, revealing that seven years ago, she funneled entire brand endorsement deals straight to her church in hopes of divine blessings, without keeping any for herself. Today, she prioritises direct aid that visibly transforms lives.
Giving her honest opinion, Makinwa said giving should come from heartfelt conviction and urged others to help where help is truly needed rather than adhering rigidly to institutional expectations.
