Why you should watch The Nevers

I’ve wanted to talk about The Nevers for so long, I’m glad I finally get to push you guys towards one of my favorite discoveries of 2021.

You know how you’re just surfing for something to get into, you have no idea what you’re getting but decide to just take a leap of faith? Yeah that’s how I ended up getting sucked into this show.

One episode in and I knew I had found something I loved. Now, imagine my surprise when I started seeing all the negative reviews. The Nevers got a 49% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics. They added, “Despite strong performances and stellar production design, The Nevers struggles to stitch its slew of intriguing components into a solid show.”

If I’m being honest, this slew of negative reviews and criticism is the exact reason I’m writing this article. Beyond all this, there’s an absolute brilliant show that tugs on your heartstrings and keeps you intrigued every episode. It just works.

So why exactly do I think you should watch The Nevers? If I told you about a show that has aliens, superpowers, awesome fight scenes, time travel, politics, camaraderie, beautiful outfits, an intriguing villain and powerful women, would you be interested? Of course you would.

I’m going to try not to spoil the show for you but I can give you an idea.

Here’s an idea of what the show is,

In 1896, an alien ship passes over London scattering little points of light all over. This light lands on a lot of women and girls, giving them superpowers. The rest of the ‘normal’ public go on to ostracize the special ones and they become referred to as the ‘Touched’.

The touched become endangered citizens and have to hide away for safety. This brings us to the St Ramaulda’s orphanage. Run by two of the Touched, Amalia True and Penance Adair (my personal favorite character), the orphanage tries to keep those who are touched safe from the rest of society.

Honestly, a quick google search on this show and you might be put off. That’s why I’m here to convince you to give it a shot.

However, not all reviews were bad. Here’s one from the Los Angeles Times,

The Nevers is a joy to watch and a thrill to follow. Supernatural realism, complex storytelling, fantastical powers and topical realties meet in this smart, suspenseful and colorful production. A litany of nuanced characters keeps this otherworldly tale grounded. Suspenseful sleuthing and action-packed battles move the story along at a rapid clip. And all the lush scenery and ambitious wardrobe along the way”

The show is created by Joss Whedon and produced by HBO.
