Nigerian media personality Denrele Edun has caused a stir on social media after celebrating his 45th birthday by “marrying” himself.
The entertainer had shared a video on social media capturing a moment in which he wore a white suit and a veil and held a bouquet, announcing that he had chosen to “marry” himself as part of his birthday celebration.
The media personality explained that he chose to marry himself because he considers himself the “greatest love story” he’s ever known.
He also reflected on his journey through life marked by “chaos, glitter, controversies, heartbreaks and triumphs”.
“Till death doesn’t do its part. So I married myself. Ater 45 years of chaos, glitter, survival, reinvention, controversy, resilience, heartbreak & triumph,” he wrote.
“I remain the greatest love story I’ve ever known. Signed, The Bride. The Groom. The HappilyEverAfter. HAPPY 45TH BIRTHDAY.”
In another post, Denrele said the gesture was about honouring every version of himself that endured challenges, describing himself as both bride and groom.
“On June 13, 1981, a star was born. On June 13, 2026 he finally married his magic. I, Denrele, I am the bride and the groom,” he added.
“I am marrying every version of myself that fought to get here. Today, I marry the only person who never left my side: ME!
“The bride escaped. The legend remained. For years they discussed the mask. Today they meet the miracle. The bride was me. The groom was me. The happily-ever-after was mine.”

The post did not sit well with some netizens who called the media personality for not acting his age

Another added:“Stay truly married to yourself o, if there’s even anything like that. Only God knows the kind of chemical reactions wey dey happen inside your brain.”
One remarked: “Mugu, may God never allow me to have a son that behaves like this ij.”
One added: “I remember the first time I met you in person at Skylux Lounge Nairobi some years back, you’re such a cool and friendly person. Happy birthday Mr Edun.”
“I learned of the word “transvestite” in 2010 or so, because a returnee uncle of mine mentioned the word while describing Denrele Edun. In 2012, I met him at a red carpet event in Owerri.
