Nollywood actress and producer Yvonne Jegede has opened up about the backlash public figures often face for speaking on issues affecting the country, saying it has made her understand why many celebrities choose to remain silent during difficult times.
Taking to social media, the actress lamented that instead of encouraging meaningful conversations, people often attack those who speak out about the nation’s challenges.
According to her, the constant criticism can discourage anyone from using their platform to address important issues.

She wrote: “The more I speak of the uncommon things I see happening in my country, the more people drag me. I see why people stay quiet in times of crisis.”
However, Jegede also questioned the expectation that citizens should shoulder responsibilities she believes belong to the government.
She said: “So after they work hard to earn and then pay their taxes, they should help the government to provide a better life for the masses, while the tax collected is meant for some family members.”
The actress further admitted that the country’s current situation has taken a heavy emotional toll on her.
She added: “This country has stretched my mental health to its limits.”
