10 Animated Movies That Have Won The Oscars

Still in the spirit of the Oscars, today we’ll be looking at animated movies that have won Oscar gold over the years.

Animation has grown from the dull 2 dimension groggy sketches we used to know to amazing works of art and technology.

Animation bigwigs – Disney, Pixar and DreamWorks are making us cling to childhood and for the entertainment value they compensate us with, we do not mind at all.

In the animation world, being acclaimed is not easy. These movies take years to make and the intense efforts are usually under-appreciated by critics and especially the Oscars. It wasn’t until 2002 that a category for best animated feature was introduced. These movie makers used to be forced to be content with only getting nominated for music.

Here are 10 movies that have taken home Oscar gold from the last 29 years.

1990: “The Little Mermaid”

Disney Animation Studios produced this movie and it won Oscars for best original score and best original song “Under the Sea”

1992: “Beauty and the Beast”

This Disney movie was nominated for 6 Oscars and it won best score and best original song for “Beauty and the Beast”. It is, till date, the animated movie with the most Oscar nominations, tied with the 2008 production, “Wall-E”.

1993: “Aladdin”

“Aladdin” by Disney received an award for best score and best song for “A Whole New World”. The movie also received nominations in other categories.

1995: “The Lion King”

Disney again with “The Lion King” won Oscars for best score and best original song for “Can You Feel the Love Tonight”. It is good to note that “Circle of Life” and “Hakuna Matata” were also nominated in the same song category.

1996: “Pocahontas”

This movie beat “Toy Story” to win two Oscars for best score and best song even though “Toy Story” had more nominations. Disney wins!

1999: “The Prince of Egypt”

Other animation houses received nominations this year but it was Dreamworks’ “The Prince of Egypt” that came triumphant, winning an award for “When You Believe” in the original song category.

2000: “Tarzan”

Disney snatched this one with the Phil Collin song “You’ll Be in My Heart”. This movie won best original song.

2002: “Shrek”

Dreamworks’ “Shrek” won the first ever Oscar for best animated feature. It won over “Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius” and Pixar’s “Monsters, Inc.

2003: “Spirited Away”

This Japanese animation movie, a Hayao Miyazaki masterpiece from Studio Ghibil took home the award this year. Note that the movie’s English-language dub and release was handled by Disney.

2004: “Finding Nemo”

Pixar got their first win with this movie. “Finding Nemo” also got nominations for original screenplay, score, and sound editing nominations.
