5 Most Memorable Headies Moments of all Time

Many call the Headies Awards the biggest night of the year for Nigerian music, and the show has delivered some truly memorable moments for music enthusiasts through the years.

With so many big personalities in attendance, it is no wonder that something notable consistently happens almost every year. Over the past years, there have plenty of unforgettable happenings, but below are a few of the most iconic Headies moments of all time.

In December 2016 at the 11th Headies award, Wizkid snubbed Caesar, the fiancé of female rapper Eva Alordiah and the scene was caught on camera which later trended.

Caesar had stood up to give a warm embrace to the singer who left the award event with the Artist of the Year award but Wizkid bypassed his embrace; instead went to embrace Eva who was sitting right beside her fiancé.

In 2011, Nigerian rap legend and producer, podcaster, eLDee The Don was contracted to host the Headies alongside nollywood actress, Rita Dominic.

As he carried out his duty as host, he smoked a cigar for fun. While the world is now woke and social media would have hailed him if it happened in 2019, it was slightly risque in 2011.

There were a lot of highlights at the 2012 edition of Headies which held at the Expo Hall of the Eko Hotels and Suites. But one that got everyone talking was Burna Boy‘s fall from the stage as he was about to perform.

The dancehall act who was selected as one of the two rookie acts to grace the stage and perform successfully turned what might have been a mishap into a fantastic performance.

So what happened? Burna Boy had just finished telling the guests how excited he was to be on stage. Obviously not looking at the spaced skirting at the edge of the stage, Burna Boy tumbled off the stage with such a might fall!

Popular singer, D’banj became the highlight of the 2015 edition of the show when he performed with a towel. Comedian Bovi recreated that moment at the 2016 Headies, but the joke eluded a lot of viewers.

Remember Notorious B.I.G and Tupac Shakur? Not a very pleasant memory but the same situation brewed with arguably the two biggest record labels in Nigeria –Don Jazzy’s Mavin Records and Olamide’s YBNL.

This came after the-then Mavin’s Reekado Banks won the award for the Next Rated Artiste Category at the 2015 Headies Awards. This obviously didn’t go down well with Olamide and he made his feelings known when he climbed the stage with his whole YBNL team when Adekunle Gold who was signed to his label won the award for Best Alternative act for his song, Shade.

While expressing his appreciation, Lil Kesh prostrated before Olamide who then took the mic and said; “Lil Kesh is our own Next Rated artist. F**k that sh*t! The streets ti take over. Every f**king single was a hit back to back. From lyrically, to Shoki to Efejoku. Ko ni dafun Iya anybody. ”

He then dropped the mic on the ground, threw away his cup with its content spewing on stage as he and his crew walked away.
