ArabLit Story Prize Announces Shortlist For Its 2019 Edition

The shortlist for the 2019 ArabLit Story Prize has been announced.

The ArabLit Story Prize which is currently in its second year, is the brainchild of ArabLit, an online resource with focus on Arabic literature translated into English. The object of the prize, is to get the world to read as much Arabic literature as possible, whilst promoting the works of Arabic writers beyond the limits of language.

The shortlist which was made public on Sunday the 15th of September, 2019, consists of four stories translated from Arabic to English.

This year’s shortlist made up entirely of writers from North Africa, was selected by three judges; Mariman Youssef, AAdam Talib and Jana Elhassan.

The shortlist as published include;

  1. “The Charcoal Garden,” by Mohamed Al-Ashry, translated by Roger Allen
  2. “The Sharp Bend at Al-Bakur,” by Najwa Bin Shatwan, translated by Sawad Hussain
  3. “The Illusion of Sea,” written and translated by Mahmoud Hosny
  4. “The Sarcophagus Maker’s Daughter,” by Samar Nour, translated by Enas El-Torky

The winner will be announced on October 15th, 2019. The winning author and translator will split the $500 prize.
