Brit Awards cancels male and female categories

British awards show, the Brit Awards have canceled separate male and female categories. They have proceeded to replace them with gender-neutral categories. This is in a bid to make the show more inclusive in 2022.

According to the organisers, they have faced pressure to remove gendered categories. And the move will celebrate artists “solely for their music and work. Rather than how they choose to identify or as others may see them.”

The Brits academy explained that there would be awards for the artist of the year and international artist of the year. This is in place of the best male and female solo artist and best international male and female solo artist.

Musicians, Dua Lipa and J Hus are now the last stars to win the awards for the best female and male artist.

Singer, Sam Smith recently came out as non-binary. They were one of the artistes advocated for a single category because the existing approach excludes non-binary artists. This year, the singer missed out of nominations due for this reason.

The 2022 Brit Awards will be held on February 8th at the 02 Arena in London. This year’s ceremony will also include four new categories: alternative/rock act, hip hop/grime/rap act, dance act, and pop/R’n’B act. All of which will be decided by public vote.

The voting academy will decide on the results of the remaining categories.
