Cardi B Talks Motherhood, Marriage, and Music in Vogue Interview

On the heels of American rapper Cardi B’s energetic trip to Nigeria and Ghana, Vogue U.S released the digital preview of their January 2020 cover series which features Cardi B and her daughter Kulture.

The outspoken Belcalis Marlenis Almanzar holds nothing back as she opens up about being a mother, her marriage to rapper Offset, and her next album.

On motherhood…

Cardi B gave birth to her first child, a baby girl named Kulture Kiari Cephus in July of 2018. Previously, she expressed fears that having a baby would put a hitch in her then-budding music career.

But now, Cardi’s tune has changed. She revealed that motherhood has been quite good for her mental health. In her words:

“Being a mom—how can I say it? Things are a little bit harder to balance, but it’s good for the mental. Like, if I’m playing with my daughter, I forget about the issues.”

In addition to that, Cardi says despite being unconventional and “ratchet”, she still considers herself a great mother. She reveals that in everything she does, she thinks about securing her daughter’s future.

On her marriage to Offset…

Unless you have been living under a rock, you have definitely heard of Offset’s cheating scandals. In fact, he was recently caught in a precarious situation.

None of it seems to matter to Cardi though. To her, it’s all part of the “For Better or For Worse” agreement. Here’s what she said about her marriage to the serial cheater Offset:

“And that’s crazy to me. I’m around so many women, and there’s always a woman talking about how she loves her man, but her man is not financially stable, or she has a problem with his mom, or the sex is not as good anymore.

“Everybody has issues. I believe in forgiveness. I prayed on it. Me and my husband, we prayed on it. We had priests come to us. And we just came to an understanding like, bro, it’s really us against the world.

“He has my back for everything, I have his back for everything, so when you cheat, you’re betraying the person that has your back the most. Why would you do that? We have come to a clear understanding. For me, monogamy is the only way. I’ll beat your ass if you cheat on me.”

The future of Cardi B’s music

Cardi B’s debut album “Invasion of Privacy” was largely a success, earning her the award for Best Rap Album at the 61st Grammy Awards.

Cardi talked about the pressure she felt to top her past successes and not become a has-been. She said:

“…it’s scary because it’s like, now you got to top your first album, and then it’s like, damn. I wonder if people are gonna relate to the new things, to the new life, to the new shit that I gotta talk about now.

“Music is changing. I feel like people just wanna hear twerk-twerk music, but it’s like, is that just a phase? I probably need a sexy song and a lot of turn-up songs. Also, I need a slow song, a personal song.

“And those are harder for me—I always need help when it comes to talking about my feelings. It’s hard for me to be soft, period. So it’s a lot of thoughts, a lot of pressure. It’s really like a job”.
