Rema Tells the Story Behind “Dumebi” on Genius

Rema’s “Dumebi” has found a strong audience with more than 11 million YouTube views to date. It is produced by Ozedikus and appears on his first album “Rema”. Speaking to Genius about “Dumebi”, Rema talks about wanting to connect with a beautiful girl.

Rema revealed that other artistes had rejected the Ozedikus production he eventually used. He decided to play with the rejected beats and that is how “Dumebi” came about.

Rema also revealed that the lyrics, which we have been dying to know the meaning of, do not actually have a meaning. He explained that he was just vibing with the beats in the studio.

Rema had the intention of filling up the song with words later on. But on playing the improvised musings, his manager advised him to retain the pure vibing quality of the song.

On the title of the song, Rema said he decided to just go with the name of Mercy Johnson’s notorious village girl character, Dumebi.

Also, Rema explained that the song was about a beautiful woman he was trying to get with. During his short studio session, Rema thought of the idea, belting it out in a matter of minutes.

In summary, it is just a fun song with sharp unintelligible lyrics. Rema’s “Dumebi” is meant to be enjoyed, not understood.
