Celebrities Drag Diezani over “Yahoo Boys” Comment

A few days ago, former Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke called out internet fraudsters or “yahoo boys”; referring to them as the scum of the Nigerian society. The ex-minister who is wanted for financial crimes in Nigeria went viral with her video, slamming yahoo boys.

Diezani expressed her disgust at “irresponsible boys” that steal money being role models for younger boys; as well as expressing concern for the economy of the Niger Delta.

She continued, saying, “there are no shortcuts up the ladder of life”; inspirational words from a woman accused of stealing about $6 billion, an amound much more than many yahoo boys will steal in their lifetime.

Of course, this did not sit well with Nigerians and many reacted to the video, social media users and celebrities alike. Media personality Bolanle Olukanmi was shocked at the hypocrisy coming from Diezani; someone who stole billions of Naira from the country’s coffers.

In addition to that, politically conscious rapper Falz called Diezani a hypocrite for calling out yahoo boys; he even called her a “yahoo yahoo girl” in an Instagram post. Check out his post below:

Alison-Madueke, 59, fled Nigeria to the U.K for fear of prosecution after President Muhammadu Buhari won the election back in 2015.

Several attempts by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to trigger an extradition treaty with the UK and have Diezani return home for trial have failed to come to fruition.

14 charges bordering on theft and concealment to the tune of $153 million, have been filed against her by the EFCC. Raids on some of her homes in Nigeria have revealed gold jewellery and wristwatches worth millions of dollars.
