
Nigerian celebrities and influencers are increasingly using the Cybercrimes Act 2015 to push back against online harassment, resulting in arrests, detentions and court cases for defamatory posts and cyberbullying.
In the past, most celebrities came online to address bullying or defamatory posts, but were still subjected to more bullying. With the Act, many are shutting trolls up for good.

In 2023, actress Eniola Badmus, won a conviction and fine against a TikToker for false accusations warning others that might want to use her for content to have a rethink as she won’t joke around with such cases.

Actresses Iyabo Ojo and Tonto Dikeh also forwarded a petition against popular controversial critic Martin Otse known as VeryDarkMan on multiple cyberstalking counts leading to his arraignment.

In late 2025, content creator Mandy Kiss (Ayomiposi Oluwadahunsi) secured the arrest of a mother and daughter Honeymoon and Mormor over sustained online insults targeting her content and personal life.
The suspects were detained in Ondo State which a viral video of them in custody led to the redeployment of the DPO involved for unprofessional conduct.
Similarly, Lawrence Alabi, husband of influencer Omotara Lawrence Lady Motara, returned from the UK in late 2025 to report X user Small Ralph and others for repeated defamatory attacks on his wife, including cruel remarks about childbearing.
The complaints triggered arrests for cyberbullying and defamation.
The detained individuals were later released, reportedly with help from lawyer Deji Adeyanju, amid debate over privacy and humiliation tactics.
The most recent case is of actress Mercy Johnson-Okojie who got a TikToker Eedie Bliss arrested for passing false information about her but eventually released her after the intervention of VeryDarkMan and the public as Bliss was to walk down the aisle the weekend she was arrested.
The actress however sent strong warning to people defaming her that she will drag them to court as this was already having effect on her children at school. Not long after, news broke out that Johnson had gotten Angela Okorie who is also an actress, arrested over alleged threatening posts.
