Eme Ogbu & Others Win 2019 African Writers Award (Read Full List)

The winners in the various categories of the 2019 African Writers Awards, have been announced at the African Writers Conference held at Sarit Centre, Nairobi, Kenya.

The African Writers Conference is the brainchild of the African Writers Development Trust, with the aim of engaging African writers on a common platform.

This year’s conference which featured panelists from Nigeria and Kenya was themed “Cultural Stereotypes in African Literature: Rewriting the narratives for the 21st Century Reader.”

The prize, awarded in four categories (children’s literature, flash fiction, poetry and short stories), saw Nigerian writer, Eme Ogbu emerge as winner in the Children’s Literature Category.

Eme Ogbu is the author of “6 Extremely Easy Ways to Die in Nigeria and Other Stories.”

The list of winners in the various categories as announced are;

  1. Children’s Literature (Judged by Nahida Esmail) – “The Zappinator” by Eme Ogbu (Nigeria).
  2. Flash Fiction (Judged by Adah Bitiah Chembo) – “Breaking the Norm; Ungrateful Girl” by Temani Nkalolang (Botswana).
  3. Poetry (Judged by Kolabomi Adeko) – “Pongwe’s Life” by Andrea B Matambo (Zambia).
  4. Short Stories (Judged by Sabah Carrim) – “Hiding” by Priscillar Matara (Botswana).
