Renowned fashion designer Toyin Lawani has voiced serious concerns about the worsening flooding crisis in Lagos State, warning that poor infrastructure planning is putting residents at risk.

In a post on instagram, Lawani highlighted how ongoing massive projects, including Eko Atlantic and the Coastal Road, have contributed to the state’s environmental challenges.

She criticised the lack of adequate canals and drainage systems, noting that sand-filling activities are displacing water without proper channels for it to flow.

“Years ago, they were dredging Eko Atlantic… and the whole of VI started sinking,” she recalled.

Lawani pointed out that flooding now affects not only low-income areas but also high-end neighbourhoods and estates. “Everyone is suffering this rain,” she said, expressing worry about children getting trapped in homes during heavy downpours.

The designer warned that continued neglect could lead to more devastating consequences. “One day you will be sleeping and water will carry all of you away,” she cautioned.

While acknowledging the economic benefits of some projects, she questioned their long-term cost to the environment and public safety.

Lawani called on authorities to learn from global best practices, build better drainage systems, and prioritise residents’ safety over unchecked development.

The fashion designer’s comments come as heavy rains continue to cause flooding across several parts of Lagos State.
