FIFA has opened a formal investigation after popular American streamer IShowSpeed was allegedly subjected to racist insults during two World Cup matches involving Argentina.

The global governing body confirmed on Tuesday it is probing an incident at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami during Argentina’s 3-2 victory over Cape Verde on July 3. While livestreaming the game, IShowSpeed, whose real name is Darren Watkins Jr., was reportedly targeted by a supporter who directed racist remarks at him, including phrases interpreted as racially abusive.

Additional footage from Tuesday’s Argentina vs. Egypt match showed fans allegedly making monkey gestures toward the 21-year-old content creator.

FIFA strongly condemns racism, hate and discrimination in all forms. These actions have no place in football, at the FIFA World Cup, or anywhere in society,” the organisation said in a statement.

IShowSpeed, who boasts over 57 million YouTube subscribers, has been attending matches as part of a special collaboration with FIFA, YouTube, and Fox Sports. The African American streamer’s energetic presence in the stands has drawn both praise and, apparently, ugly backlash.

FIFA said it acted immediately upon becoming aware of the incidents. The investigation is ongoing, with potential sanctions for those involved.
