Renowned Nollywood actor and singer Gabriel Afolayan has opened up about his career, stressing that his passion for acting stems from a deep inner calling rather than merely the influential legacy of his famous family.
In a candid interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise program, the 40-year-old star addressed the weight of belonging to one of Nigeria’s most prominent entertainment dynasties.
The Afolayan family, often regarded as Nollywood royalty, traces its roots to the late pioneer filmmaker Adeyemi Josiah Afolayan popularly known as Ade Love, whose groundbreaking work in Yoruba cinema laid the foundation for generations.
Gabriel’s siblings including acclaimed director Kunle Afolayan, actor-director Aremu Afolayan, and actress Moji Afolayan, have all made significant marks in the industry.

Despite this background, Gabriel noted that acting was something he felt drawn to from childhood. “I grew up strictly feeling that this is exactly what I wanted, even without having anything to do with or seeing my dad or seeing any other person,” he said.
“I think it was just inner… it was within for me.” He described the profession as “more of a calling than a job,” revealing how watching films as a child fueled his intuition and personal drive.
Gabriel acknowledged the pressures that come with the family name, noting the constant need to prove oneself and preserve the legacy while carving out an individual identity. “It’s a big weight… one thing is the legacy. Then another thing is what spice do you have as a person?” he reflected. Over time, he believes audiences will recognize his unique contributions, separate fromthe family heritage.
