Harry reveals he turned to alcohol and drugs over Diana’s death

Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, has continued to open up about his challenges as a member of the British royal family. The Me You Can’t See, Harry’s new TV show about mental health, premiered on Apple TV Plus on Friday. In it, Harry tells Oprah Winfrey how he struggled to deal with Princess Diana’s death in 1997. He admitted that he resorted to drugs and alcohol to help him cope.

Harry said: “I was willing to drink, I was willing to take drugs, I was willing to try and do the things that made me feel less like I was feeling.”

He described the ages between 23 and 32 as “a nightmare in my life”. Harry also mentioned that he had anxiety and panic attacks. He admitted that he drank excessively not because he enjoyed it, but “because I was trying to mask something.”

Harry speaks about Diana’s death

According to the new interview, Harry shares that he and Meghan were “followed, photographed, pursued, and threatened”. He added that this happened within days of their relationship becoming public.

While Harry rarely mentioned members of the royal family directly, he did mention his father, Prince Charles in the series. His father said he didn’t speak about Diana’s death because he expected Harry to deal with the press coverage and other issues. Prince Charles is currently the heir to the British throne.

Diana, Princess of Wales, died as a result of injuries suffered in a car accident in Paris’s Pont de l’Alma tunnel. She died in the early hours of August 31, 1997. Dodi Fayed, her partner, and Henri Paul, the driver of the Mercedes-Benz W140, were pronounced dead at the scene. Trevor Rees-Jones, their bodyguard, survived the crash but was critically wounded.

According to some reports, the erratic behaviour of paparazzi chasing the vehicle at high speed led to the crash. BBC also confirmed the reports.
