Christmas morning in my household is a time of great excitement and anticipation. The day begins with a short devotion, where we come together as a family to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas and express gratitude for the blessings in our lives.
Immediately after, my mother steps out to the early morning market to purchase the freshest ingredients for our Christmas feast. She returns home with a lively chicken, which is quickly prepared for the pot, along with rice, pepper, and other spices. The aroma of the chicken dancing in the hot oil fills the kitchen, teasing our taste buds and building our anticipation for the delicious meal to come.

Our Christmas tradition is a bit different from the usual jollof rice and chicken. We prefer white rice and chicken soup, which is a staple in our household.

The children are assigned various duties to ensure that everything is prepared to perfection. Some are tasked with peeling the potatoes, while others are responsible for stirring the pot or setting the table.

As the food nears completion, the children are given a special task – to take a plate of food to our neighbors and friends around. This tradition is not just about sharing food, but also about spreading love and kindness. It’s also a moment of friendly competition among families in the neighborhood, as everyone wants to outdo each other in preparing the most delicious dishes.

As expected, some of our kind-hearted neighbors show their appreciation by giving the children some money, which always brings smiles to their faces.
By afternoon, we all freshen up and head out to a fast food restaurant or an amusement park. The rest of the day is spent having fun, laughing, and creating memories that will last a lifetime.

When the moon comes out to felicitate with us, we gather around in the sitting room to exchange gifts, marking the perfect end to a wonderful day. The smiles on the children’s faces as they unwrap their gifts are truly priceless, and the joy of giving and receiving is a reminder of the spirit of Christmas.
Christmas in my home is a time of joy, love, and togetherness. It’s a celebration of our traditions, our culture, and our faith. As we come together to share a meal, make merry, and exchange gifts, we are reminded of the importance of family, friendship, and community.
