How One Villain Role Earned Beverly Naya the ‘B*tch of Nollywood’ Title

Nollywood actress Beverly Naya has opened up about the impact her villainous role in the popular 2016 romantic comedy film The Wedding Party had on her career, revealing that the character earned her the unwanted nickname, “B*tch of Nollywood”.

The actress, who has appeared in a variety of films throughout her career, explained that while the role helped increase her visibility in the Nigerian film industry, it also created an unfortunate perception among some filmmakers and audiences.

According to her, producers began associating her with villainous characters and repeatedly offered her similar roles, making it appear as though that was the only type of character she could play.

Speaking about the experience, Beverly said she strongly disliked the nickname because it did not reflect the range of roles she had taken on throughout her career.

She said: “I hated that title. Now, let me tell you why. I literally just said, you know, I was telling you about The Wedding Party. I literally played the villain in that film and, as a result of that, ‘Oh, let’s cast Beverly with that same character.”

The actress explained that the success and recognition that came with the film eventually led to a pattern where she was repeatedly considered for similar roles.

She noted that this limited how some people viewed her abilities as an actress, despite the fact that she had played different kinds of characters.

She added: “So it started to look like that was all I was playing, and that wasn’t the truth. What the truth actually is was that I was playing a variety of roles, but I am not just in control.”

Naya’s comments highlight a challenge that many actors face in the entertainment industry, where a successful portrayal of a particular character can sometimes lead to typecasting.

However for Naya, the experience appears to have reinforced the importance of being recognised for her versatility rather than being defined by one character.
