I don’t make money from Nigeria — Burna Boy

Nigerian Grammy Award winner, Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu aka Burna Boy, has been surrounded with even more controversy. He has stirred up even more conversation recently with his recent tweets. Responding to a tweet accusing him of denying his motherland, he said he does not make money from Nigeria.

I’m from here and I live here because I love my home and my people, E no pass like that. I don’t make money from Nigeria. Na only cruise dey here,” Ogulu said. He also responded to a tweet referring to him as a British artiste. The Afrobeat star responds with sarcasm, he wrote: “All join! Add Colombia and Timbuktu sef.”

The drama started after a British grime artiste, K*Ners praising Ogulu for his ‘talent’ and ‘hard work’. In the tweet, he wrote: “When I said I was there and saw the rise of @burnaboy I really was. He’s living proof that hard work and talent pays off”. The tweet got some responses that implied that Burna Boy should credit his success to Atlantic Records too.

The tweet that started the whole drama

K*ners defended Ogulu and said the record label which the singer signed with in 2017 was not solely responsible for his rise to fame. However, the tweeter suggested that he was just an average musician in Nigeria until he signed with the record label who they claim are responsible for his international recognition.

The British grime artist then responds by asking if they were suggesting that Ogulu should not have signed the deal. It was then that Ogulu responded asking K*ners to ignore them. He wrote: “Bro. Don’t get worked up. It’s Nigerian Twitter with 2 delusional fanbases, trust me You are not talking to actual people if their handles look like that.”

This tweet sparked a lot of bile from Nigerian Twitter. There was a general assumption that the two delusional fanbases he was responding to were Wizkid and Davido’s fans. The Wizkid FC and 30 Billion Gang seem to always have a go at each other on the bird app. However, this time, they came together to rain insults on Burna Boy for taking what they thought was a jab at them.

The superstar, Burna Boy has received a lot of anger from Nigerians in the past over his comments. They have also accused him of making prideful comments.

Ogulu ends the series of responses with a shout out to his fan base, the outsiders.
