In a deeply emotional recent interview, veteran Yoruba actor Prince Dele Odule has shared a raw account of his struggles during a low point in his life in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The seasoned thespian, known for his powerful roles in films like Ti Oluwa Ni Ile, revealed he once reached such a state of despair that he priced his own casket, doubting his ability to rise again.

“I had priced my own casket before when everything and my life were in shambles in Abeokuta. I didn’t get myself anymore; I didn’t believe I could break through,” Odule recounted. He added that colleague Olaiya Igwe was present during a particularly tough moment and “started crying like a baby” upon witnessing his state.

Born in 1959 in Ile-Ife but hailing from Oru Ijebu, Ogun State, Odule has enjoyed a decades-long career spanning stage and screen since the late 1980s. He has served as President of the Theatre Arts and Movie Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN) and remains a respected figure in the industry.

His revelation and testimony highlight the mental health and financial pressures many entertainers face, even at the peak of fame. Some, however, during the challenging moment, pass away, while some cry out for help to navigate the trying time. The veteran actor now owns a film village in Ijebu Ode, which also serves as a tourism centre.
