Nigerian actress Lillian Afegbai has publicly apologised following backlash over a controversial social media post regarding the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) nominations.
Afegbai, in a statement shared via her official X (formerly Twitter) handle, admitted that her earlier reaction to not being nominated was inappropriate and disrespectful.
She acknowledged that her comments not only undermined the credibility of the awards but also disrespected fellow nominees, her colleagues, and her supporters.

“This apology should have come earlier. That tweet should not have happened. No excuse,” Afegbai wrote, taking full responsibility for her actions.

Afegbai further expressed regret towards the organisers of the AMVCA, her “To Kill A Monkey” team, and fans who have supported her career over the years.
She admitted that her reaction stemmed from disappointment after missing out on a nomination, especially as she had viewed her recent work as a defining moment in her career.

“Honestly, I was disappointed. But that’s not an excuse for how I responded,” she said.
Reflecting on her journey in the film industry, Afegbai revealed that she had long struggled with feeling overlooked. She described her involvement in “To Kill A Monkey” as a breakthrough moment that made her feel finally recognised.
However, she conceded that her response was driven by “hurt and entitlement,” adding that it was out of character.
“I was wrong and I am sorry. Please give me a chance to be better. I no go fall una hand again,” she concluded.
Taken back to March 31st, 2026, eelive.ng reported that Afegbai emphasised about her character, IDIA, from TKAM, stood out significantly, as she claimed that no other role trended as much as hers during the past year. She suggested that the level of attention and engagement her performance generated was a clear indication of its success.
