Veteran filmmaker and actor Kunle Afolayan has stirred fresh conversation in Nollywood after making bold remarks about his long-standing contributions to cinema and the evolving strategies used to promote films in Nigeria.
eelive.ng reported that he spoke in a recent interview, the award-winning director insisted that claims suggesting he is new to the cinema exhibition scene are inaccurate, stressing that he was among the early pioneers who pushed Nigerian films into major theatre releases, both locally and internationally.

“For cinemas you are totally wrong, because I am one of the people who started all this cinema gig, I started before anybody and I dance, even London, so it is not just local, Kunle said.
“We had to think what we need to do to promote the film without dancing, I don’t know how funke Akindele and the likes are doing it, everyday changing costumes, i can not.” He added.

According to him, these early efforts helped lay the groundwork for the current boom in theatrical releases enjoyed by Nollywood productions today.

The filmmaker also addressed the increasingly elaborate promotional campaigns surrounding new movies. He revealed that, while planning publicity for his own projects, his team often has to carefully consider how to attract attention without resorting to constant public displays or costume changes. Afolayan admitted that he finds it difficult to keep up with such high-energy promotional styles.

Without naming specific projects, he referenced colleagues such as Funke Akindele, noting that her promotional strategies appear far more flamboyant and relentless than what he personally feels comfortable with.
