Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has shared a cryptic message to what many see as indirect response to colleague Kunle Afolayan, with a pointed yet motivational message shared on her Instagram story.
The talented filmmaker who has paved a path for herself in the industry as an actress and filmmaker wrote; “If you can’t beat them or join them, create your own path. No allow jealousy burn you. The sky is so big for everybody to fly. Eyin werey jojo!!!”

The drama started when Kunle Afolayan who is a famous filmmaker, during an event for his film Aníkúlápó, reportedly said: “I don’t want ₦2 billion in cinemas that I won’t be able to collect ₦10 million out of it.” This comment quickly went viral on X formerly known as Twitter, with many interpreting it as a subtle shade toward Funke Akindele. Her latest movie, Behind the Scenes, has been smashing box office records, grossing over ₦2 billion in Nigerian cinemas, making it one of the highest-grossing Nollywood films ever.
Social media users viewed Afolayan’s remark as downplaying massive box office efforts like Funke’s by suggesting filmmakers often end up with little personal profit after distribution and other deductions. Many called out the “jealousy” from certain quarters in the industry. Some noted that the filmmaker meant no harm as he was stating what he has observed.
