Kenyan Lesbian Film “Rafiki” By Wanuri Kahiu Screens In Lagos This Weekend

Controversially-themed movie “Rafiki” by Kenyan director, Wanuri Kahiu, will be screening this weekend in Lagos, Nigeria at the African Artists’ Foundation.

Upon its release, the movie stirred up a lot of controversy and even received a ban by the Kenyan Government, for “promoting lesbianism”; a ban which was however lifted for one week, so the film could qualify for an Oscar nomination.

“Rafiki” tells the story of Kena and Ziki who, “despite the political rivalry between their families, resist and remain close friends” and when love blossoms between them, the two girls are forced to choose between happiness and safety, given the conservative society they live in. In 2018, the Lesbian romance made history as the first ever Kenyan movie to debut at the Cannes Film Festival in France.

Regardless of all the drama and controversies surround it, Women’s Film Club, an initiative created to celebrate women in and through film will be screening the film on Sunday, July 14, 2019.
