Kunle Afolayan Enraged by Pirated Copy of ‘Citation’

Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has lashed out at a fan who complained over the lack of French subtitles on his pirated version of Afolayan’s latest movie Citation.

Citation, which debuted on Netflix earlier this month, made the Top 10 trending list for many countries and has had reasonable viewership. But that viewership has been stunted by pirated copied of the film circulating on torrent sites.

This is not the first time the director is grappling with film piracy. Back in 2015, he revealed that he had lost over $2 million on his movie October 1 to piracy. He even said the menace of piracy in Nigeria made things luckless for investors in Nollywood.

This is why there was no surprise when Kunle Afolayan lashed out at a fan on Twitter who complained about subtitles when watching a pirated copy of his beloved project Citation.

Afolayan tweeted, “You are a very stupid idiot. That’s what you get if you keep downloading films from unauthorized streaming platforms”.

Many tweeters have called Afolayan’s tweet an overreaction. However, given the amount of money, time, and energy it took to make the movie; I believe Afolayan is well within his right to be angry at someone for indirectly stealing from him.

Citation follows the story of Moremi Oluwa (Temi Otedola); a 21-year-old postgraduate student who seeks justice after a sexual harassment experience. It debuted on Netflix on November 6, 2020.
